I used to live two houses up the street from Lee Marvin in Tucson. I would see Lee frequently, out and about in his 1967 Olds convertible or 1970 baby blue Ford pick up. He looked like Ben Rumson a huge chunk of the time I would see him, or like his role in Shout at the Devil. Rarely did I see him clean shaved. In public if I saw him at the Drug store or Baskin Robbins I would greet him as "Mr Rumson", it was our inside joke as it was fun to watch the folks who were silently asking "Is that Lee Marvin?" I also fondly remember Lee's wicked sense of humor, I used to have a 6 foot long pet Iguana that I'd take places. And once at the drug store while I was looking at the magazine rack, Lee approached me "Jim, let me borrow your lizard a minute." I handed the iguana over. Lee went up to some woman and said "Lady, Look, 3-D!" and thrust the iguana back and forth in front of the woman! Shocking her at this action. Apparently she was stalking him at the store, asking lots of questions. Lee also once asked me in 1977 if I was doing anything that week, and he invited me to go deep sea fishing at the Australian Great Barrier reef with him and his family. But alas, I had to decline, no passport. Lee also was willing to meet my friends on occasion, I had numerous friends out of state that would say "You don't know Lee Marvin!" And when they'd visit, I'd pull up to lee's house if I spotted his car and truck home. Lee would come out and ask "Another non-believer?" And would thrust his hand in the face of my friend and smile "Hi, Lee Marvin, pleased to meet you!" And Lee and I would chat up his recent fishing trip he would frequently make. Lee and my mother also shared the same doctor, and in August of 87, my mom was in Tucson Medical center with complications from her asthma medication. I would go and visit her and she'd point out Lee's room, he was under an assumed name and a sign on the door said "Family visitors only". He was there for days as was my mother. Then on the 29th my mom called in tears from the Hospital, "Lee Marvin just passed away", I asked how did she know? She said her doctor literally just told her, knowing we were practically neighbors. It broke my heart that I lost a friend. And in the time I knew him , only once asked for his autograph, for a friend in Boston who was a huge fan and also ill. I had Lee sign a photo I had of him from Shout at the Devil to him. To this day I miss my neighbor, his smile, his wit, his humor. Miss you Lee!

Hi Roger and all, This movie, along with Bye Bye Birdie, was on a VHS that was borrowed from a friend when I was a kid. I must've watched it a dozen times. It was branded into my brain forever. I've since bought the DVD and the soundtrack. Recently, I discovered the book Fiasco, which chronicles some Hollywood flop movies. PYW is included and it gives a good narrative of the filming. Now I've stumbled on your site, its heartwarming to know there are others who hold the movie dear. It would be amazing to see someday with a crowd of fans.

A good portion of his was filmed in my great uncle Dennis's ranch. I. I visited in 1970 and he had me convinced there were still wild Indians running around. He had stories of selling antiques from his barn for the set and blocking the dirt road with his tractor until they oiled it. My father worked on the ranch until the end of ww2 and then followed the railroad south to Westwood and Susanville. We still have family in hermisten and Pendleton

Saw this at the drive-in with my husband, who had just returned from Vietnam. Had our two young sons with us. It was a rollicking, lively moment until Lee Marvin ripped Jean Seberg's blouse open. I was horrified that my young sons should be thus exposed  But some decades later, they seem to have remained unscathed. It's hilarious how critics panned this, reacted chapter and verse on its failings, but it remains one of our abiding favorites . Too much great music, great acting and pathos to be buried by critics.

My grandfather was the Forest Service shop mechanic in Baker and except for Lee Marvin's beard could pass as a double. He had that same whiskey voice. He along with many of the people in Baker supplied old antiques for props. I still have the old 40-60 Whitney Kennedy repeating rifle used in some of the scenes. He only held my baby son once before cancer took him but every time I see Lee Marvin sing "Wandering Star" I see my grandfather once more.

This is a great website that Im very happy to have found. Paint Your Wagon has been one of my favorites since I first saw it in the theaters. Great music and acting of a fascinating time period. Part of the attraction was the beautiful scenery. It also helped that Pardner was from Michigan. Were going to try and stop by the site this summer when were out that way, now that I know how to find it, thanks to your website!

I truly enjoyed this website and the memories that it stirred in me. I lived in Baker (City) at the time and was a partner in a Chevron Oil Dealership with my dad and brother. I traveled to the site about 5 days a week during the making of the movie. I have many experiences and photos to share with you should you be interested - from it's inception, construction filming and others. This includes every aspect of it including a picture of the hut at the top of Anthony Lakes. Also filming at Don Doyle's airport and additional anecdotes. George G.

I was in the sixth grade when Paint Your Wagon came to town. My dad was a banker at US Bank, and he met many of the stars when they came into the bank. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band lived in a house about three blocks from our house. Clint Eastwood walked by us on the street but we were too shy to ask for his autograph. One autograph we did get was Ray Walston's. We four kids were sitting in our car at Safeway -- that sure wouldn't happen today! -- and we heard a man say to another man, "Hey, Ray!" After Ray's conversation was over, my little five-year-old brother yelled "Hey, Ray!" and Mr. Walston came over to our car and spoke to us. He was such a nice man. He answered all of our questions about the movie and was such a gentleman. It was a fun time to live in Baker!

The pictures of Paint Your Wagon site were outstanding. I was 18 that summer of filming and worked there every day. In fact, I shared lunch with Lee Marvin one day. There were actually 4 different film sites. One called tent city (where Kettle Cr and East Eagle converge, No Name City, Elizabeth cabin site and in a mill in Baker City. I wrote my Masters thesis about the Natural History of the Wallowas and No Name City could easily portray the town of Sparta, not far away. The area is very rich in gold mining history

I was working in Pendleton, Oregon as a hostess cashier at the Tapadera Resturant. That day 2 younger men about 25 years of age came in to eat, they were on their way they told me to the Movie set of Paint Your Wagons, we chatted during the time they were there, then they asked me if I would like to come up to Baker, they would meet me and take me out to the site to see the set etc. I was skeptical, but they explained they were the Technicians that were in charge of setting the blasts off that blew up the sets. I jumped at the chance. So the next day I drove to Baker they met me and drove me out to the set......it was a great experience, I was able to go in the Saloon and a couple of tther buildings. There was not any shooting going on that day. I was 21 years of age, now 69, oh so long ago.

I was 14 years old when Paint Your Wagon was made. My Dad worked for Morrison Knudsen Company and helped build and tear down No Name City. We lived 1 mile from the movie site by an old gold mine. We got to go to the movie site and watch them film many of the scenes. When the movie stars drove to the movie site they had to drive past our camp. Many of the extras were hippies that lived in camps near the road that led to the movie site. As you went up the mountain you went past the hippie camps, then ours then to the movie site. We knew what car each movie star rode in, even the bear. We were all friends. It taught me that no one is better than anyone else! I will never forget watching the movie stars filming the movie and bring their home movie cameras and taking pictures of my dad and his co-workers run the big equipment they were using to make the roads and buildings for the movie. We had our cameras taking pictures of the movie stars getting ready to film their scenes in the movie. We were one of the last ones to see the movie site in one piece. My dad supervised when they burned the buildings down. It was eerie to watch it burn, I remember the church was the last building that I saw standing. It was a very sad day for me. It was the end of a very exciting experience, the end of summer and the beginning of a new school year.

I was in the Air Force stationed in Baker (not City, just Baker in those days) from 1963 to 1965, a few years before the movie was made. The 821st Radar Squadron area was on B Street, that eventually became the home of a Bible translating institute, and the radar and radio sites were south of the town atop Dooley Mountain. We rode busses up to the mountain to get to work every day.
My buddies and I wandered all around the region and had such a great time. The locals were so friendly. I loved it there. I even attended some college classes in La Grande in my spare time.
I arrived in Baker on the Union Pacific RR at 2:00 AM on a chilly July night and spent my first night at the Baker Hotel. Price was $4.50. When the sun came up the following morning, I looked out the window and found it so different from my home in Michigan. There were MOUNTAINS! I knew then I was going to like it there.
A couple of weeks later fire broke out in the hills west of town and military personnel were asked to volunteer to help fight it. I volunteered and never worked so hard in my life. We worked all night fighting that blaze that was creeping down the hill and threatening the farms below. By morning we had it under control and the farmers wives put out a spread of sandwiches and things that was so welcome. We were starving to say the least, so that was payment enough.
Anyway, I want to say I like your site, I like Baker City (my father in law lives there btw) and I was proud to serve my country up on that mountain in that lonely radio shack.

Thank you for sharing your photos. I came across your site, quite, by chance, under 'old cabin'. I enjoy early photographs of cities, farm houses, photos of lighthouses, barns. It's such a shame that so many old buildings are torn down, without any record of the origins, who built it, the people that lived there. Excellent web site. Thank you. Taupez

Beautiful pictures! I was raised in Baker, your pictures brought back wonderful memories. I could visualize as a child walking around Anthony Lake; we camped there many times. We spent our summers running around in the Elkhorns and Sumpter & Granite. Some of your pictures made my heart ache for Baker County. My life was touched by Paint your Wagon also--My father was Lee Marvin's Driver--

We got to go up to the beautiful Eagles to see the set--Baker was exciting at that time, I was about 15, I wasn't sure what Hippies were, but my dad talked about them often. I remember there was a Pizza place named the Grizzly Bear and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band was there. I have only been back twice since graduation--Baker has spread out and changed it's name, but it still feels like home. Thanks for the memories.

The problem with putting such great pictures on the web is that everybody and his brother end up wanting to move to Oregon! We should have dismal rainy pictures of Mist and Drain, and Boring would be real exciting too! (Yes folks, they are all real places in Oregon, my beloved home state.)

Anyway, thanks for the great pictures and thanks to everyone who put their memories and stories on you guest book.

Nice to stumble upon your PYW pages. I was actually hunting for an old friend that I met on the set of the movie: Tracy Baker is his name.

Anyway, I was one of the first 20 extras hired at the very beginning of the shoot. We got $25 a day plus a meal. We also rec'd permission from the producer to camp -out of sight- above the 'tent city' set, so we didn't have to come in from Baker.

Worked there all summer. A very nice experience

Beautiful pictures, Oregon is truly God's Country!! I am a native Oregonian (Southern Oregon) and love this state. My great grandparents homesteaded in the Pacific Northwest and I will forever be thankful they heeded the call (from Pennsylvania and Minnesoto) to "Go West". If I want snow, I'd rather drive to Mt. Hood than have it on my doorstep.

My husband and I love the beaches now, great for day trips. When we were young, we often camped around Central Oregon. We have been just about everywhere in Oregon except the Steens Mountains.

Hello. I can't believe how many people are as into this movie as I am. I can't even tell you how many times I've watched it. It's like an escape for me. I love the characters and the singing and drinking. I somehow take myself back the that time and place whenever I watch it. This movie has so many funny spots like "Whats a fornicator?? I don't know, I'm not a religious man". its so great! And the Parson. What a character. "Yer go'in to HELL!!" I love all the songs, mostly when Rotten Luck Willie (Harv Presnell) sang, They Call the Wind Maria. Its shortly after that when I saw Elizabeth (Jean Seberg) for the first time. Whenever I watch PYW, I can remember laying on the floor in front of the TV and watching the whole movie. It's so wierd how the same thoughts and feelings come back to me no matter how many times I watch it. The first time I saw PYW, I was about 8 or 9 yrs old then and I remember how much I liked Elizabeth back then. I think thats why I married a blonde. I just love this movie and I hope I can someday make it to the sight and camp out there for a few days. I'm sure it'll be just great.

Paint Your Wagon is one of my all-time favorite movies. Because I, too, was born under a wandering star, I hopped a plane to Boise and drove to Baker City to find the location where the movie was filmed almost 40 years ago.

I was late getting into Baker City, so I decided to stay for the night. I was able to get last-minute reservations at the Geiser Grand Hotel. Much to my surprise, I found that the cast of PYW stayed at this hotel part of the time while filming. The next morning I got an early start, and drove out to the site.

Using clear, yet untried directions from your PYW Web site, I began my journey. The scenery in and around Baker City was hilly, dry, and peppered with tumbleweed. I couldn’t imagine the lush scenery that I remember from the movie could be so close by. Never the less, with paper instructions, a 4x4, and my friend Magellan (I’ll explain this later) I drove off.

The driving instructions that I pulled from your site proved to be invaluable. I think, though, attached to those instructions should be a caution that the roads are dangerous and, at times, are nothing more than a goat trail. (Parts of Eagle Creek in particular). I do suspect that since these roads are gravel, they have no winter maintenance. There are no guide rails, many hairpin turns, and embankments that, if you slid off, you would never be found. I would never do this road in the rain, in snow, or at dark. Once in the valley, however, you are standing in the middle of the movie.

When I found the meadow, it was marked with a sign indicating the location where PYW was filmed, and two rough access paths running toward the creek. I had no idea why they were there. While I expected to find nothing, I did find that the clean up of the site was incomplete. They likely hauled out what was on the surface, and bulldozed the rest. The creek has also eroded the bank – much more than it had. The uneven surface makes it a little difficult to walk down there, but you can see some exposed foundations of what was probably the brothel.

As you may recall from the movie notes, when the town collapsed in the last scene, it was really pulled down by cables. Sure enough, there are some exposed hooks and eyes secured to pulling cable – block and tackle type. (Be careful walking around that area – and do not drive it as there are subsidence’s in the ground, I assume old tunnels, and pieces of exposed rebar which you could drive over or trip on).

As a suggestion, it would be great to have a map on your site to print out to use as a building guide. Unfortunately, I had to go by memory.

Before heading back to the airport, I felt comfortable enough to ditch the written instructions, and rely on my GPS, Magellan. I asked for the shortest route back, not the best route. That damn route nearly killed me! The road surface was large pieces of loose shale, not gravel, and the narrow road had doughnut turns rather than hairpin. The only saving grace was that you could spot another vehicle approaching by the fierce plume of road dust that it kicked up. Dramamine was invented for roads like this. As it turned out, I was rerouted back to Baker City. I went to the local museum, and I was surprised to see a diorama of the No Name City. The film studio apparently spent $70,000 on the model which they eventually turned over to Baker City once they were finished with it. If I had only seen it prior to my trip, it would have helped me identify landmarks easier. Perhaps you could make a map from it or scan it somehow?

From the diorama I learned that those two access points were the original roads leading from the current Eagle Creek Road leading into No Name City. Using them with a map would make a good reference.

Since I have managed to make a short story long, I thought about this idea once I reached stable ground. Since the 40th anniversary of the filming is in Summer 2009, the “unofficial” PYW fan club/ audience should camp on site for a week or so and relive the filming of one of the greatest movie ever filmed. What do you think of that?

Great website...I first saw Paint Your Wagon in Prince Rupert, British Columbia when I was a kid with my cousin Mark Burley, on our way to S. Eastern AK, on board the 40ft Big Skookum that I worked on as a kid with Vern Morgus, who took me in while my dad was in Phan Rang, Vietnam. MyGod, we ALL laughed so hard...little place called the Totem Theatre. It created such fond childhood memories that many yrs later I would give my only child the name "Mariah", after the beautiful ballad in this very unique picture that was such a departure for the two leading men who starred in it. I saw the movie in the summer of '71 when I was around eleven or twelve. Many summers past...and I was afforded the chance to meet Mr. Eastwood, if only for a moment, and he seemed a very gracious, friendly person. Thanks for a place to post and read memories!

I remember some Hippies coming from the south that could only use a x to sign the tab they ran at the little store by my house. The Rayburns ran the store and gave credit to a lot of the Hippies that came to town. And everyone payed up. My Mom was a friend of the Justice of the Peace and went with him to perform a wedding. What a big deal that was, Everyone high on LSD. She had never seen anything like it. We also had a naked hippy on LSD in our frount yard. What a big deal that movie was in Baker

Hi, glad to find something on Paint Your Wagon. I was one of those Hippies in the movie. I had just finished doing another film withe Elvis Presley called Double Trouble. I was in my home town Walla Walla when I found out about the filming of Paint Your Wagon in Baker, Oregon. So I headed up to the site and got a job in the film. I have many stories to tell about the film as you can imagine, we spent the summer camping right there on the set. I haven't been back since but have many happy memories of that time and place. I asm planning to organize a reunion for cast, crew, and fans in 2008 here in Walla Walla as it will be the 40th anniversary. And hopin to do the same next year for the Elvis picture I was in. I have been a Professional Photographer here in Walla Walla and Hollywood for the past 40 years. Maybe we could get together and make it happen. Many thanks, Steve Allen

Yea,its true, four of us Barry,Rocky(his 60 Corvette, Chuck and I rode up from Portland smashed in that topless Vet to be Extras in that movie. It rained most of the time we were there but we all were costumed an given our roles. I was cast as a "Dandy" with a shirt previously used by Ray Milland. Chuck and I were kicked out of the "Stars" Food tent by Lee Marvin, what a grouch! I stumbled once into the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band rehersing in a small temporary building - they were great even way back then. Barry said he was filmed as an extra in the movie. There are so many extras in the picture that I have yet to see him. I got sick and threw-up for three days in a wet tent before giving up and moochin a ride back home. That was one of many adventures we had back in the day. Now we need the "Mud Farm" stories!

The pics are wonderful. My Mother was raised in Baker City (class of 1942), and moved to Portland to work in the WWII shipyards. Her maiden name was Mary Davidson. My middle daughter has lived there for almost four years and loves the quiet of a small town.

The beauty in all parts of Oregon leaves me breathless, we are indeed lucky citizens.

Favorite:

I love it all, the coast for its rugged landscape and beautiful ocean. The Willamettee Valley for the farms which grow and raise the food we eat. Central Oregon for the high desert vistas. Eastern Oregon has mountains that shine in the snow with valleys full of ranches providing meat and produce. What a wonderful state, the other 49 have their magnificent vistas and I love visiting them! But living here is my life.

I was able to get coordinates at the sign, they are 45° 01' 28" - 117° 20' 10". This is one of my favorite movies and I was so glad when you provided the directions. The scenery there was spectacular!

I have cherished this movie since I was in my college days in 1970s. Unfortunately, this movie is not available at any of the VCD/DVD shops in India or in the Far East.

But I have the audio CD for the songs and I keep listening to them often.

The song WANDERIN STAR is my favourite amongst the other songs.

This website is beautiful and gives the movie a sort of historical respect and greatness. Whoever photographed these sites - you've done a very good job at preserving the heritage of this wonderful movie. Whoever made this movie and the songs - THREE CHEERS TO THEM !!

Thanks / Mohan

I stepped off the Union Pacific City of Portland passenger train in July of 1963 to begin a two year assignment with the US Air Force there in Baker (they didn't call it "Baker CITY" in those days). It was about 2 AM so I spent my first night at the Baker Hotel which cost around 5 dollars. I'm glad they have preserved a lot of the old buildings there. They bring back a lot of memories. My Air Force buddies and I had such a good experience there in this very friendly town and had so much fun exploring the surrounding area.

Once we helped fight a grass fire that broke out one afternoon in the hills west of town. It took a lot of people nearly all night to get it under control and saved some ranches.

They also asked some of us to help clear undergrowth for ski trails up at Anthony Lakes. The following winter they let us ski for free. That was fun.

These photos bring back a flood of wonderful memories of the town and all the friendly people. There is no place on earth like Baker County. Many thanks for sharing your fine work.

Nice site, very pretty photos.

I love the movie "Paint Your Wagon." The film premiered when I was in the 9th grade, and, according to 'expert' Hollywood critics, largely failed to live up to it's hype. Can't say that I entirely agree. In fact, I've never met anyone who doesn't absolutely love the film, and it's probably one of those that grows better with time. "Moriah" might well be one of the most beautiful songs ever sung, and "Wandering Star" isn't far behind. Great soundtrack in that movie. Thanks for sharing your site.

while watching the paint your wagon movie I thought the area was lake tahoe when I could see the ski runs on the mountain tops but went online and found your pictures that are great.....I spent time on the Illinois river in a place called Takilma outside of Klamath Falls in 1970 with my dog Rio and friends camping along the river and being totally awed by the beauty of your state,...being from Chicago originally it along with northern California convinced me to leave the concrete canyons and flatlands behind and only go east for no more than a week at a time or less, and stay within eight hours drive time from the Pacific Ocean and live on a mountain in the west wherit is the best....thanks for the pictures, Tom

Wonderful photo journalism. Your photos tell a story, they are artwork. My father worked on the titles for the movie "Paint your Wagon". He died when I was only 13, so I hardly got to know him. Years later, through a series of fortunate events we moved to Richland, Oregon, not far from the site of the movie. We spent our youngest son's 6 yr birthday there.
